Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office

The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office is the primary and essentially only law enforcement agency in the county. Keweenaw is Michigan's smallest county by population, with roughly 2,100 residents, and it sits at the far northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The sheriff's office operates with very limited staff, which is typical for a county this size. The office handles all patrol, jail functions, and official records for the county, including the police blotter and any arrest logs.

BordersOnly borders Houghton County

Keweenaw County only borders one other Michigan county, Houghton, and is surrounded by Lake Superior on three sides. There are no incorporated cities in the county. Eagle River is an unincorporated community that serves as the county seat. With no municipal police departments, the sheriff's office handles all law enforcement in the county, making it the only agency to contact for police blotter records.

The Michigan State Police also has a presence in this part of the Upper Peninsula. Incidents handled by MSP troopers are separate from sheriff's records. If an incident was handled by state troopers rather than the county sheriff, a separate FOIA request to MSP would be needed for those records. Due to the small staff, requesters should be patient with response times, as the office has limited administrative capacity.

How to File a FOIA Request in Keweenaw County

Submit a written FOIA request to the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office at 5105 4th Street, Eagle River, MI 49950. You can mail your request or visit in person. Be as specific as possible about the records you want, including dates, types of incidents, and any report numbers. Because the office has limited staff, clear and focused requests are more likely to be processed quickly.

Michigan's Freedom of Information Act, at MCL 15.231 et seq., governs all public records in Keweenaw County. Under MCL 15.231, records are presumed public unless an exemption applies. You do not need to be a Michigan resident. You do not have to explain why you want the records. The request must be in written form.

The office has five business days to respond under MCL 15.235. They may extend by up to ten additional business days for complex requests and must notify you in writing if they do. Standard fees apply, typically $0.10 per page for copies. Labor is billed at the rate of the lowest-paid employee able to do the work. For requests with estimated costs over $50, a deposit may be required first.

Note: Certain types of information are exempt from disclosure under MCL 15.243, including personal contact information, ongoing investigation material, and juvenile records. If a request is denied, you can appeal to the agency head and then to circuit court under MCL 15.240. Indigent requesters may ask for a waiver of the first $20 in fees by submitting a signed affidavit of indigence with the request.
